Common Eyesight Problems That Are Solved with Laser Eye Surgery

Lasik surgery is not the cure all for every eye sight issue. Not every issue that you have with your vision will be solved with the same surgery; just like every ailment with your body can’t be solved by undergoing the same surgical procedure.  In the article below we will educate patients on the most common eye issues that laser eye surgery, LASIK, can possibly remedy.

The three most common problems that patients are bothered by that can be treated with LASIK include: nearsightedness, farsightedness, and blurred vision.  When you meet with your ophthalmologist they will measure your vision.  Vision is measured using units known as diopter.  If you are nearsighted this final number is expressed as a negative number whereas farsightedness is represented with a positive number.

Myopia – Nearsightedness

Many patients that are plagued by nearsightedness can find their vision corrected with LASIK surgery.  LASIK eye surgery provides successful results to most patients suffering from Myopia however, severe cases may be told that laser surgery is not right for them.  A consultation will be done to see where your vision lays on the spectrum to determine if LASIK is an option for you.

Hyperopia – Farsightedness

Although LASIK surgery is available to patients with farsightedness the consultation is a bit more in depth than it is for nearsightedness.  The evaluation of patients goes into greater depths as it is important to determine the degree at which the cornea is flattened.  With a flat cornea the eye is shorter than normal and causes object that are in the distance to focus behind the retina.

Astigmatism – Blurred Vision

Patients with blurred vision in one or both of their eyes most likely have a condition known as astigmatism.  This occurs because of an uneven steepening of the cornea.  Often this ailment can be corrected through LASIK surgery.

As previously stated, the first step in determining if the problem you are experiencing with your eyesight makes you a candidate for LASIK is to schedule a consultation to meet with the surgeon.  Even if laser surgery is not an optimal treatment of your condition it is important for you to understand that you have other options, both surgical and non-surgical.

The professionals at Rohr Eye & Laser Center focus your treatment plan around achieving the best possible results for the candidate.  If LASIK isn’t going to give you the result you are looking to achieve we will explore both surgical and non-surgical solutions that provide you with the vision of your dreams.

Understanding the Basics of Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery, LASIK, is one of the most common eye surgeries performed in the United States, with millions of procedures being done every year. The procedure is performed by a trained, board-certified ophthalmologist who knows how to do the surgery. Like with any elective surgery you might have done, it is very important that you know all the risks, rewards and understands that there are no guarantees of success.

LASIK – Laser Eye Surgery

Weigh the Risks and Rewards – Be sure that before you go out and have LASIK refractive eye surgery that you have thought through everything completely. You never want to have any type of surgery without weighing everything first and be confident in your decision.

Choosing the Right Eye Surgeon – There are several thousand board-certified ophthalmologists who can perform LASIK and most have already performed thousands of them, depending on how long they have been in practice. However, you need to be sure that you are comfortable with your surgeon before you should allow them to perform a procedure on your eyes. Check around, ask for recommendations from friends and family members.

Determine Myopic Level – Get to know how bad your refractive error is beforehand, so you know upfront about the likelihood that you will need refinements later down the line. As a rule, the more Myopic, nearsighted you are the higher the likelihood you will require additional refinement procedures.

Know What to Expect – LASIK is performed with you 100% awake and therefore you will want to know what to expect during the procedures. You do not want to be surprised by something when you are halfway through your LASIK.

Understand the Risks – Be sure that you understand that with all surgeries that there are several risks involved with LASIK Eye Surgery. Make sure to ask plenty of questions of the surgeon during all consultation visits before you schedule the procedures to be performed.

Know the Limitation of Surgery – There are known limitations to LASIK Refractive Surgery, it is only designed to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. You could still end up needing to wear glasses depending on your other vision issues.  Also, LASIK will not prevent you from ever needing reading glasses or “readers” later in life.

Take Care Post Surgery – After you have decided to have the surgery done and the procedures are completed, you will be given a list of post-surgery care instructions. Be sure to follow them exactly, they will help you to heal properly and lets you know what some of the possibilities to expect.

Alternative Options – Last but, certainly not least, LASIK is just one of many eye procedures that can be performed to correct several eyesight issues. Be sure to discuss all your options before going with LASIK.

Is LASIK an Option When You Are Over 40?

Can I get LASIK eye surgery even though I am over 40?  This is a question the professionals at Rohr Eye and Laser center often get when meeting with a prospective new patient and the answer is simple, YES!  Although there is nothing simple about your eyes or how you care for them, laser surgery to correct your vision is not something to spend time being worried about.

LASIK, known to be short for laser assisted vision correction, is referred to about many different types of refractive eye surgery and laser vision correction techniques.  Dr. Jeffery S. Rohr is a highly skilled and trained eye doctor who focuses on vision correction surgery in Michigan on patients of all ages.

As a person’s vision starts to deteriorate after 40, the first thing that comes to people’s minds is that they need to start wearing reading glasses, bifocals, or reader contacts.  Often with the thought that LASIK is not to be considered because of their age or they believe their vision problem is not “bad enough” to consider laser vision correction surgery.  Thankfully however, LASIK is the solution for several issues patients over 40 are conflicted with including:

  • Seeing in the distance – Although this often means patients may need to use readers even after the sight for distance issue is resolved.
  • Monovision LASIK – This procedure decreases or eliminates the need for glasses or contacts for seeing close or far away.
  • Corneal Inlay – This is an implant that is placed on the stroma to correct vision when objects are near.

However, if a patient’s vision has begun to fade because of cataracts then LASIK is not a good choice for you.  For patients with cataracts a better option to improve your vision may be actual lens replacement.  If cataracts are your only eye ailment, then most often eye surgeons will recommend lens replacement over correction.

No matter what age you are it is important to do thorough research on the ailment that is afflicting your vision and causing you issues with seeing be it near or farsightedness and the treatment options available.  Both online and in person research will ensure you understand what treatment is available, how it will help you, the recovery, and the prognosis for your future eyesight once it has been corrected.

If you are looking to reduce or even get rid of your eye glasses and/or contacts let us at Rohr Eye & Laser Center help you! Increasing Freedom After LASIK Eye Surgery

After LASIK eye surgery patients should expect an increasing freedom in their lifestyles.  There is a new-found convenience that is found after laser vision correction.  Upwards of ninety percent of LASIK patients state that they are more than satisfied with the results seen after surgery.  In fact, there are a number of lifestyle changes that are mentioned over and over when talking about the independence vision correction surgery gives patients.

TV in Bed

Imagine how annoying it is to have to get up and take out your contact lenses after watching television in bed and gotten comfortable or worse yet falling asleep with your glasses on, rolling over, and breaking them.  LASIK allows people to enjoy clear vision twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week without the weight and irritation of glasses rubbing against your nose or cheeks or the uncomfortable feeling of dry eyes in the morning.  Clear vision makes a huge transformation in patient’s everyday routines including catching some late-night television.

Decrease Expenses for Clear Vision

Costs associated with vision exams, yearly contacts, and eyeglasses can really add up to a lot of money over the course of a year.  The updates in your prescription and the constant need for replacement glasses can cost upwards of a thousand dollars.  Not only do they cost more financially, contacts cost you in time as well.  There is a significant amount of time involved in caring for your contact lenses.  With LASIK eye surgery the time and financial costs of taking care of your eyes decreases significantly.

Convenience in Sport Activities

Have you ever tried running with glasses on?  LASIK makes it possible to participate in sports without the inconvenience of contacts or glasses.  Patients that are into swimming can swim without needing expensive prescription goggles or risking the loss of a contact lens in the water.  Not only can this increase your performance in sporting activities it can add comfort in participation.

Physical Changes

Without the need for eyeglasses, LASIK patients will experience a change in their physical appearance.  Women may find a new-found love for makeup as they no longer need to hide their eyes behind glasses.  In fact, men and women both enjoy the cosmetic changes of laser eye correction whether they are at home, work, or play.

Options in Sunglasses

Without the need for prescription eyeglasses you have a world of sun glass options to choose from.  Sunglasses are an especially important fact of life for LASIK patients as they help protect your newly fixed eyes from the damaging rays of the sun.

Of course, the greatest advantage of laser correction surgery is the reward of clear vision.  Reward yourself today with a free LASIK consultation with the professionals at Michigan Lasik – Rohr Eye & Laser Center.

Can Surgery Fix an Astigmatism?

During the last few decades a variety of methods to treat an astigmatism have grown widely accepted.  An astigmatism is a defect in your eye or in the lens that is caused by an abnormality on the spherical shape of your eye which distorts images. When a patient has an astigmatism, the light rays entering the eye are prevented from meeting to come to a common focus point.  The most common treatment has been to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses and more recently laser surgery correction. Although all three treatment options are acceptable in treating an astigmatism it is important to understand the options to make an informed decision regarding treatment based on your lifestyle.

Whether you are near sighted, far sighted, have blurry vision, or other sight issues, then you most likely have an astigmatism.  A diagnosis is a simple eye exam with an optometrist where they can tell you if you are suffering from an astigmatism or another eye deficiency.  There are three main forms of astigmatism including:

  • Myopic Astigmatism: Otherwise known as nearsightedness means that either one or both of your eyes are myopic, shortsighted, in varying degrees.
  • Hyperopic Astigmatism: Otherwise known as farsightedness means that either one or both of your eyes are hyperopic in varying degrees.
  • Mixed Astigmatism: This occurs when both types of astigmatisms are present, myopic astigmatism in one eye and hyperopic in the other.

Astigmatisms can be either regular or irregular.  With a regular astigmatism the principal meridians are perpendicular to one another, ninety degrees apart. With an irregular astigmatism the principal meridians are not perpendicular.  The most common is a regular corneal astigmatism meaning that the front of the eyes surface is oval in shape.

LASIK surgery is one of the ways that an astigmatism can be fixed.  Laser vision surgery corrects the asymmetrical shape of the front surface of the eye, the cornea.  Lasik takes the cornea of the eye from the shape of a football, the astigmatism, back to the shape of a baseball.  The lasers reshape the cornea and in turn correct the astigmatism.

Laser surgery correction to treat an astigmatism is usually done in under fifteen minutes and can be completed without anesthesia.  The reshaping of the cornea in the eye often takes under a minute per eye.  LASIK surgery is done with the advanced technology of an eye tracker that works by monitoring your eyes position and adjusting the laser as needed throughout the surgery.

Astigmatisms are easily corrected with glasses and contacts but if you lead a more active lifestyle or want added convenience in your life consider LASIK vision correction.

5 Ways LASIK Can Improve Your Quality of Life

LASIK is currently the most popular laser procedure under refractive surgery that is used to treat a variety of eye problems for improved vision. Also referred to as laser-assisted in-situ keratomileuses, this procedure uses two methods: either with a small instrument containing a disposable blade called a microkeratome or with a femtosecond laser, which is a device that creates a burst of laser energy at very high speed to reshape the cornea and help light entering the eye to be focused onto the retina for clear vision.

You are a good candidate for a laser vision correction procedure if you in overall good health, you do not have chronic eye dryness, are not pregnant, and you aren’t taking certain medication or have medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases known to affect the results of the surgery. If you want to improve your vision, here is how LASIK procedure can improve your quality of life.

  • Corrects nearsightedness

LASIK is considered a safe and effective and the most popular procedure for correcting the most common refractive error of the eye known as nearsightedness or myopia. People with this condition find it difficult to see distant objects clearly and LASIK can reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses or contacts.

  • Corrects farsightedness

Also known as hyperopia, unlike nearsightedness, people with this eye condition can focus better on objects from afar, however, things get too blurry up close. The goal of LASIK surgery is to alter the shape of the cornea, which significantly improves refractive vision and eliminates reliance on contact lenses or eyeglasses.

  • Corrects astigmatism

The most common symptom of this refractive eye error is blurred or distorted vision at near and far distances usually is caused by an uneven curvature of the cornea or the shape of the lens inside the eye. This condition is known to occur in children as young as five years old, it is, therefore, important for parents to extra vigilant with their children’s eye health and to have eye examinations at regular intervals for early detection to avoid vision problems from uncorrected astigmatism. LASIK surgery can change the shape of the cornea permanently to restore the eye’s ability to focus by allowing the light rays to focus on the retina for improved vision.

  • Fast results and recovery

There are no stitches, bandages, or excessive aftercare procedures to deal with after LASIK surgery. In fact, most patients can return to their normal lifestyle and work within as little as 24 hours.

  • Long-term results

People who’ve worn glasses almost all their lives will probably appreciate the long-term results of LASIK surgery, which is, eliminating the exorbitant costs incurred for corrective eyewear. Laser vision correction saves you hundreds of dollars each year, and you can begin to enjoy life to the fullest with a 20/20 vision acuity. Ask your doctor if LASIK procedure is ideal for you.

Differences Between LASIK and PRK

If you’re considering eye surgery for better vision without the need for glasses or contacts, you might have already started researching your options and come across LASIK and PRK. Although you’ve probably heard of LASIK, not many know what PRK is and the major differences between the two. Here’s a breakdown of the two and how each of the procedure differ from another so that you can make an informed decision as to which one is best for your vision needs:

What is PRK?

PRK is short for Photo Refractive Keratectomy, which is a type of laser eye surgery that is supposed to help with vision problems, such as astigmatism, farsightedness and nearsightedness. It was created before the now popular Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis, aka LASIK, and is still a popular choice for many when it comes to eye surgery. LASIK does the same thing to correct eye vision problems, but the technique is different than the one used for PRK. However, the goal of both procedures is to change the shape of a person’s cornea.

The Differences Between the Two

Although both aim to correct vision problems, the methods and techniques during surgery is what differentiates them. For LASIK, an eye surgeon will make an incision in the person’s cornea in order to create a flap that’s lifted up so that the laser can reshape the insides of the cornea. The surgical laser is controlled by a computer that will carefully reshape and repair any imperfections in the cornea’s curvature that lead to the vision problems in the first place. Then the flap is placed back and will heal over the reshaped part of the cornea after a couple of days.

When a person undergoes PRK, there is no flap inside the corneal tissue. Instead of the flap, the eye surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea to expose a small area for a laser to reshape. Because of this, PRK is usually a better option for those who meet criteria like having chronically dry eyes.

But the biggest differences between the two types of vision surgeries are discomfort and how fast one’s vision recovers after the surgery. Those who underwent PRKs usually recover a bit longer than LASIK because the outer layer of their cornea needs more time to heal. After PRK eye surgery, patients are given prescription eye drops to reduce discomfort and promote healing.

The time it takes to heal from LASIK is much faster, with discomfort after surgery usually mild and short. Many can start to see normally after a few hours coming out of surgery, but it will take a few months before their vision reaches peak quality.

The Do’s and Don’ts of LASIK Eye Surgery

Getting the best result out of your laser eye surgery occurs when you take the necessary steps to prepare for before and after the procedure.   As with any surgery, there are certain risks involved.  This is just one of the reasons it is important that you do everything possible to prevent issues from arising.  Below you will find some basic tips that can help assure you get the best results possible from your LASIK procedure.

Laser Vision Correction Precautionary Steps

Even before LASIK is scheduled there are certain things that you can do to adjust your routine in order to receive the best results from your laser eye surgery.

  • If you wear contact lenses, it is best to stop wearing them for a few weeks leading up to the surgery. Contact lenses distort the shape of the cornea which can cause the results from your LASIK procedure to be less than perfect.
  • Do not use any type of eye drops for at least a week before your laser vision correction surgery.
  • Avoid scents and makeup for a few days leading up to the procedure as well including the day of. The day of it is important not to use creams, lotion, or any other chemical substance near your eyes.
  • Any and all eye conditions that you have previously suffered from are important details to mention to your eye surgeon.
  • Arrange for transportation to and from the surgery. If at all possible, find someone who is willing to stay with you as well.  You will be under the influence of medication for awhile after the surgery and your sight will be off, so driving is not advised.

Post Surgery Recommendations

There are many ways in which to enhance your healing after LASIK.  For the best results post-surgery follow the advice of your eye surgeon and consider the tips below.

  • Hold off on bathing above your neck for the first few days post-op. The last thing that you want to do is to accidentally expose the area to any soaps or chemicals accidentally.
  • Rely on friends and family to drive you until your eyes are fully healed
  • Do not use any types of creams, makeup, face products, or scents near your eyes. Also, wait to modify your hair color for a few weeks after surgery.  Your eyes will be incredibly sensitive, and the chemical scent can literally burn your eyes.
  • Avoid exercise as well. Skip strenuous workouts for at least a week.  Your body needs time to heal after surgery and something as important as your eye sight is not worth risking.
  • Throw out older makeup and start fresh. Makeup harbors bacteria and even though you won’t be wearing it for awhile it is important to not compromise the health of your eyes with an infection.
  • Use protective eye wear especially sunglasses when leaving the house. The sun can damage even the healthiest of eyes.  Unhealed eyes are especially sensitive.  Sunglasses also help to eliminate debris such as sand and other dirt particles from entering your eye.

Guidelines To Follow In Order To Qualify For LASIK

Laser eye surgery is performed to help improve a person’s eye sight.  Most LASIK patients are seeking freedom from wearing eye glasses and contact lenses.  If this describes what you are looking for, laser vision correction surgery may just be the best option for you.  While laser eye surgery is effective in correcting the visions issues many Michigan residents are facing, the procedure cannot be performed on everyone.  If you or a loved one are considering laser surgery, it is important to schedule an appointment with a LASIK surgeon to discuss your specific needs.

If you are just beginning to look into this treatment option as an effective method to correct your vision issues there are some general guidelines below to consider.

Considering Age

First it is important to note that laser eye surgery is not performed on candidates under eighteen years of age.  In fact, many eye surgeons prefer that clients be a bit older to undergo the procedure.  As you age your vision tends to change even more.  In order to avoid having to perform LASIK more than once it is best done on candidates whose vision is less likely to change drastically in the coming years.

Health Of Your Eyes

The health of your eyes is another element to consider.  Laser eye surgery is performed to correct eye sight.  To qualify, your eyes must me healthy and free from eye disease, infection, scars, and corneal abnormalities.

Physically Able to Withstand Surgery

As a LASIK patient you are required to lay down.  It is important that you are able to do so without experiencing pain or discomfort.  Vision correction using a laser will be an impossible surgery to undergo if you are unable to lay flat for a period of time without being in pain.

Ability To Focus Your Eyes

Patients undergoing laser vision correction must be able to keep their eyes focused on a single light point for a few minutes.  This helps to guarantee positive results.  With the technology that is used today, lasers have the capacity to keep up with a patient’s eye movement however, the results of those who are able to focus without eye movement often have better results.

Refrain From Using Contacts Before Surgery

Patients must not wear their contact for about a month before the laser eye correction procedure.  This is because, contact lenses affect the shape of the cornea and will in turn affect the results of the eye examination that is done.  For the most accurate eye exam and results, patients must rely solely on their eye glasses for a significant period of time before their surgery.

As with any type of procedure or surgery there is a fair share of risk involved.  With this in mind all patients must sign a consent waiver prior to surgery.  It offers hospitals and medical practitioners protection from legal ramifications if something goes wrong during the procedure.  This is most often NOT the case but is becoming more and more procedural before surgical events.

Call to schedule an appointment with a local eye surgeon today to see if you qualify to undergo LASIK.  Chances are if you are over eighteen, your eyes are healthy, you are able to lay flat for an extended period of time without discomfort, you can live without your contact lenses for a month, and can assume the risks involved you will be a perfect laser eye correction patient.

If you are looking to reduce or even get rid of your eye glasses and/or contacts let us at Rohr Eye & Laser Center help you! Improving Eyesight One LASIK Surgery at a Time

There are many solutions when it comes to correcting vision problems.  Some individuals choose to wear contacts and glasses to make their day to day sight better while others investigate more convenient vision correction methods such as laser vision correction including: LASIK, PRK, and LASEK. There are a number of benefits that come with choosing surgery to correct their vision on a more permanent basis.  Although glasses and contacts have been the solution for vision problems since the 1300’s, laser eye surgery offers an innovative approach that allows users proper vision without the use of daily aides.

As with any surgery, the benefits must outweigh the drawbacks or people would not opt to participate as is the case when it comes to laser vision correction surgery.  If patients have specific questions, detailed to their vision situation directly, they should meet with an eye surgeon for a consultation.  Below we will focus on the benefits that most patients receive after correcting their vision with LASIK, LASEK, or PRK.

Improved Eyesight

In studies that have been performed LASIK has proven to be effective, meaning patients have improved vision after the procedure.  For over eighty-five percent of patients 20/20 eyesight returns while over ninety-five percent achieve 20/40.  Irrespective, the results received through laser vision correction surgery are quiet stunning. For most participants an impressive upgrade in vision is had.

Lasting Results

Perfect vision is not obtained instantaneously after LASIK, in fact it may take several months for your vision to adjust to its new normal.  However, once your vision has settled into its new normal the change will be permanent.  Eyesight deterioration from age is possible later down the road but is easily corrected with a follow up surgery.

Quick Recovery

Although you won’t be driving yourself home from the surgery most LASIK patients return to life as normal in as little as twenty-four hours.  Unlike most types of surgery, eye surgery is relatively simple as far as the recovery process is concerned.

Barrier Free Vision

Although there is a cost associated with laser vision surgery, it is far less than the amount of money individuals will spend over a lifetime paying for eye exams, glasses, and contacts.  Each year individuals need to replace glasses and contacts.  This can add up over time not to mention can become quite a hassle if misplaced or broken.  With LASIK you will never have to worry about losing a contact, breaking your glasses or what not.

People started to become aware of the benefits of LASIK around the 80’s with an increase in popularity in the mid 90’s.  LASIK is a common procedure that gives patients the freedom of vision without eyewear.  With this surgery there is no need to be concerned with glasses and contacts and how they will affect spur of the moment plans like swimming.
